Types of Cupolas
There are two main types of cupolas: Decorative and Functional. Decorative Cupolas sit on top of a closed roof. Functional Cupolas are open to the main structure. (See illustrations below.)
The Cupola Installation Method described on this page is designed to work with Decorative Cupolas and Functional Cupolas with some kind of internal access. If, at all possible, this is the method we recommend for installing a weathervane on a cupola. It is typically stronger and less expensive than using a V-Shaped Bracket.
If you have a Decorative Cupola with NO internal access, a Functional Cupola with a vaulted ceiling, or Functional Cupola with a ceiling and NO internal access, please see our Basic Drilled Installation Method or our V-Shaped Mounting Bracket Installation Method.
