This handcrafted American Flag Weather Vane flies proudly on top of a number of patriotic buildings in different states throughout our country. The gold leafed stars and stripes are included in the price* and contrast brilliantly with the darkened copper. The copper has been shaped to mimic the fabric of the flag rippling in the wind. For strength, thin copper rod trims the perimeter of the flag. A customer recently sent us a picture of their installed weathervane with a fox nestled beneath.
Silhouette style weathervanes are good for low or normal wind conditions. If you have a high wind environment, such as directly on the coast or on a mountain top, we offer a wedge shape version of this design. The wedge shaped version consists of two separate sheets (rather than one in the silhouette style), with a small air space where the two sheets connect with the vertical copper tube. This small air space make the weather vane stronger in a high wind environment.
One memorable American Flag Weathervane project was for a family, whose son was a newly minted firefighter. They commissioned two weathervanes; a portrait weathervane of their son as a firefighter, and an American Flag weathervane. Both sit proudly on top of their home and garage and can seen by passers by in their neighborhood. Pairing weathervanes is a popular tradition; we even talked with one man about an interesting pairing that would include an American Flag with an Elephant Weathervane!
Flag styled weathervanes have a long standing tradition starting in the 14th century, when copper banner weathervanes began to replace cloth pennants atop castle walls. Seven centuries later, weathervanes inspired by country, city or state are still popular. We have made flag weathervanes for residents of the country of Belgium and the city of Cologne, Germany. We have often toyed with the idea of making a banner weathervane based on the flag of our great state of California, especially since we already have a California Golden Grizzly Bear weathervane.
Customers in Canada loved this American Flag Weathervane so much they commissioned a Canadian Flag Weathervane to represent that fine nation.
The photo of the American Flag Weathervane shown above was sent to us by customers living in Washington State. It was made in 1996 and has acquired a deep rich brown patina over the years. Eventually the copper will pick up a lovely turquoise green patina as famously seen on The Statue of Liberty.
The national flag of the United States of America, often simply referred to as the American flag, has 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the Union. Nicknames for the flag include the “Stars and Stripes”, “Old Glory” and “The Star-Spangled Banner”.
* Because the cost of gold leaf fluctuates frequently, it is possible that the price for this weathervane could go up or down based on current market conditions. Please verify pricing with us prior to placing your order.
