Brown University, while doing a remodel, commissioned us to create this exact replica of an original Brown University Banner Weather Vane for one of their halls. Founded in 1764 as “The College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations,” Brown is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine Colonial Colleges established before the American Revolution. At its foundation, Brown was the first college in the United States to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation. We think this banner design originates from around the time Brown’s engineering program was established, in 1847. (If anyone reading this can help us get this date correct, please contact us. We would love to make the correction.) Brown University was the first in what is now known as the Ivy League.

Our master artisan, Thomas, enjoyed the challenge of this piece. Creating the boxed edges required great expertise to achieve smooth squared edges on all sides. This copper banner should weather and patina in beautiful ways and be a wonderful visual on the campus for a century at least. Another option for banners, is to gild parts or names in gold or palladium, creating a lovely contrast in the design, and sometimes writing the name of the institution or business being represented in this bright contrast.
