This Bobwhite Quail Family Weathervane, (Colinus virginianus) is another one of our popular designs. This quail is the state bird of Georgia, but is adaptable to other quail varieties, if this is the design layout that strikes your fancy.
The weathervane showcased here was commissioned by a family of five. They took advantage of the century old weathervane tradition of adding “lucky pennies” to their weathervane. In this case, pennies from the year the mom and dad were born were added to the adult Bobwhites, and pennies from the years each of their three children were born, were added to their respective chick. Since we do make these weathervanes to order, we can also add the name of each family member below “their” personal Bobwhite!
As pictured here we used, in addition to the copper, optional gold leaf to accent the distinctive markings for which this bird is known. Our most popular gold leafing option is to do the topknot, beak and legs, although in this version we gilded the face, upper neck, belly and legs as well.
We make our quail weathervanes with custom glass eyes we receive from a taxidermist. Typically our quail will have brown eyes with black pupils, giving them a very life-like appearance.
Quail is a collective name for several genera of mid-sized birds in the pheasant family Phasianidae, or in the family Odontophoridae. The California Quail, (Callipepla californica), also known as the California Valley Quail or Valley Quail, is a small ground-dwelling bird in the New World quail family. It is the state bird of California.
