Our Boy with Dairy Cow Weathervane is actually a portrait piece of a customer’s prize dairy cow! We used a combination of copper and optional gold leafing to indicate its distinctive markings. As the copper weathers to a deep chocolate brown color, the lighter colored gold will stand out in brilliant contrast. The longer the weathervane is outside, the more like a real Holstein cow the Weathervane will become! This cow is made with brown glass eyes with black pupils to give it a more animated appearance. Eye colors, optional gilding, inscriptions, and ‘Lucky Pennies’ are all selected when you make your order. We also incorporate a cowbell as a part of this particular weathervane to give it a nostalgic feel, harkening back to an earlier, simpler time.

Our specialty being custom copper weathervanes, we would happily create an Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, or Guernsey Cow Weather Vane for you, or even a Milking Shorthorn, with or without the addition of a person. Pricing for these is shown at right.

If preferred, we can substitute a milkmaid, farmer, or another stand-in for the young boy. We know each weathervane represents a personal interest and if we can add a detail that satisfies that preference, it makes the project fun for us as well. Another option we can add is  lettering to a fletching in gold leaf below the back legs of the cow to represent the name of your dairy, making it a unique and memorable way to advertise your profession.

See this article in the Washington Post (July, 2007) about our Dairy Cow Weathervane.

Cattle (often called cows in vernacular and contemporary usage, or kye as the Scots plural of cou) are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily Bovines of the family Bovidae. They are raised as livestock for meat (called beef and veal), dairy products (milk), leather and they are used as draught animals (pulling carts, plows and the like). In India, they are the subject of religious ceremonies and highly respected. It is estimated that there are 1.3 billion head of cattle in the world today. Cows – Cattle are ruminants, meaning that they have a digestive system that allows them to utilize otherwise undigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as ‘cud’. This cud is then re-swallowed and further digested by specialized microorganisms that live in the first section of the stomach. These features allow cattle to thrive on grasses and other vegetation.
