This Scottish Highland Cow Weathervane is a handsome copper depiction of this ancient breed of cattle originating in Scotland and known for their shaggy coats and long horns. Our customer requested optionally gold leaf gilding on the cow’s horns and the family name in golden letters on the arrow fletching. This same customer also ordered a Scottish Highland Bull Weathervane and was gracious enough to send us photos of his large cow weathervane after it was installed on one of the cupolas over his 3-car garage.
Cattle (often called cows in vernacular and contemporary usage, or kye as the Scots plural of cou) are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily Bovines of the family Bovidae. They are raised as livestock for meat (called beef and veal), dairy products (milk), leather and as draught animals (pulling carts, plows and the like). In some countries, such as India, they are subject to religious ceremonies and respect. Cows/Cattle are ruminants, meaning that they have a digestive system that allows them to utilize otherwise undigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as ‘cud’.
