Our Cox Eight Racing Shell Weathervane was originally commissioned by a former Olympic rower residing in New Port Beach, CA. It was an interesting project and the customer had some wonderful ideas about its portrayal. We love the choice of making the standard lower bar a rowing paddle. And the solution we worked out together to illustrate the water’s surface and the oars dipping in is very successful.
This all copper vane is also interesting in that we employed a couple of construction styles and materials in its crafting. The rowers, the blades of their paddles and the coxswain are silhouette style, cut from a single heavy gauge sheet of copper. The racing shell and horizontal paddle blade are swell bodied style, while the water and the paddle shafts are copper tube.
