This Trotting Belgian Malinois Weathervane is a portrait piece, as you can see from the pictures above. Because this lovely breed was developed entirely as a working dog, its physical characteristics can vary widely, from fur length and markings, to even some variation in size. Working from photos of a particular dog is the only sure way to create a weathervane in this breed that captures the look of your companion. The customer who commissioned this Belgian Malinois Trotting, requested optional gilding of paladium leaf on the ears, muzzle and spots, and gold leaf on the collar. These bright spots will create a wonderful contrast as the body of the dog weathers and patinas. They also requested an inscription on both sides of the horizontal tube, and ‘lucky pennies‘ be sealed into the dog’s body. They selected black for the dog’s glass eyes.

This sculpture piece is of copper, in swell bodied style. Our skilled artisans did a lot of careful hammering with their individualized specialty hammers to create the expression of this dog’s fur.

The Malinois is a medium to large breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd dog rather than as a separate breed. The name ‘Malinois’ is derived from Malines, the French name for the breed’s city of origin. They were bred for personal defense, and because of that innate urge, and their great noses, they are now also working at detecting scents of all manner, from tracking to identifying particular substances.
