This Bernese Mountain Dog Weather Vane, perched on his copper ‘mountain’, is crafted in copper with optional gold and palladium leafed markings to achieve the tri-color coat for which these dogs are known. The thick fur coat, another distinctive feature of this breed, was created by hand hammering thousands of individually positioned blows into the copper while the hillside on which the dog stands was shaped over custom made oak posts with soft rawhide hammers.
Many of our customers send us photos of their dogs and we refer to them to personalize the markings, turning it into a portrait weathervane of their dog. Most of our customers for Bernese Mountain Dog Weather Vanes live in cool climates, where these dogs tend to thrive. Our northernmost Bernese Mountain Dog Weathervane resides just north of Anchorage, Alaska, but these vanes have also found homes on the shores of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevadas and in Washington and Colorado.
The Bernese in Bernese Mountain Dog refers to the area of the breed’s origin, in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. The breed was used as an all purpose farm dog for guarding property and driving dairy cattle long distances from the farm to alpine pastures. Outdoor dogs at heart, they need activity and exercise, but do not have a great deal of endurance. They enjoy hiking and generally stick close to their people.
