Our Running Great Dane Weathervane was inspired by a White Dane named Bailey. It was commissioned by an appreciative group of 50, commemorating the dog of a much admired colleague who showed a wonderful dedication to working with and providing service dogs.
We applied optional gold leafing to convey Bailey’s white markings, leaving exposed copper to indicate the black markings. With time, these “spots” will darken to a deep chocolate brown, closely mimicking the real dog’s distinctive appearance. The unusual blue eyes are another characteristic of white danes which we were able to duplicate using custom made taxidermy eyes.
As is the case with all our weathervanes, we would be happy to discuss modifications to reflect the conformation and markings of your Great Dane. For example, we also offer a Standing Great Dane Weathervane. We have made many variations on this design, including natural ears, cropped ears, male, female and with or without personalized markings done in gold and/or palladium leaf.
Collars with tags in the shape of a bone, circle or heart can also be added, and the dog’s name can be hand stamped into the metal. You can also specify gender, add a favorite toy or even another dog to create a completely unique and personal weathervane.
The Great Dane, is also known as the German Mastiff and is one of the world’s tallest dog breeds; the current world record holder, measuring 112 cm (44 in) from paw to shoulder, is “Zeus”. Their large size belies their friendly nature, as Great Danes are known for seeking physical affection with their owners. There are dogs resembling Great Danes in Egyptian images dating back 3000 years, but the breed standard of Danes occurred in the late 1800’s, and is complicated to trace because of the politics of the eastern Europe at that time.
