The Labrador Retriever Weathervane, Running with Duck was originally commissioned as a tribute to a loyal hunting companion who loved nothing more than to be outside with his owner doing what he was bred to do. While this particular Lab is carrying a duck, we can easily substitute a pheasant, grouse or another object, if that is your preference. We have also made versions of this Running Lab Weathervane without the Duck.
As shown here, the Lab’s body was crafted in brass while the duck and the field grasses are copper. When brand new, brass is similar in color to gold leaf. Brass, however, is a 70% copper alloy and over time it will darken and patina very like copper. In order to maintain the light yellow brilliance, we recommend using optional gold leaf.
If you have a chocolate or black lab, we recommend your dog be made of copper. Copper will first weather a deep brown color and typically remains dark for several decades. Weathered copper will most closely mimic the dark coats of these labs. Eventually, the metal will start to pick up the beautiful turquoise green patina for which old copper is known.
When a customer orders a Labrador Retriever Weathervane from West Coast Weather Vanes, they are given the opportunity to select the metal combination, The glass eye color, whether the dog is wearing a collar or not, choose ‘lucky’ pennies to commemorate special years (such as birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, or lifespans, etc.) and decide on optional gold leafing to accentuate the features of their dog. If you send us pictures or a video of your Lab, we will transform your weathervane into a portrait of your loyal companion.
Labrador Retrievers are a type of gun dog and make excellent game hunting partners. Their ability to work quietly alongside hunters while watching for birds to fall from the sky, marking where they land, and then using their outstanding nose to find and retrieve dead or wounded birds has made them the king of waterfowl retrievers. They are also used for pointing and flushing. Labs are powerful and indefatigable swimmers, noted for their ability to tolerate the coldest of water for extended periods of time.
