Here is another of our popular Labrador Retriever Dog Weathervanes. In this one we have Man Throwing Ball. This is a portrait weather vane, and was commissioned for a 50th Birthday gift by the subject’s brother. It was sized to be mounted in the garden for constant viewing. Because the recipient lives on the blustery New England coast, it was decided to add a hardened steel Security Device to the order. Wouldn’t want the vane to up and blow away!
For this vane copper and brass have been fabricated in the detailed swell-bodied technique that our master metal workers are known for. While the majority of this sculpture piece is copper, the belt and hillside are brass. These two metals will weather and then patina with the subtlest of differences. For highlights, optional gold leafing was requested for the man’s arms and face, and on the dog’s collar. Palladium gilding was selected for the man’s hair. These non-ferrous applications will remain bright highlights for many years, depending on weather conditions. The collar on the dog includes an inscription of his name, Cody, and both of their names, Mike and Cody are inscribed on the horizontal copper tube the sculpture is built upon. Capping the tube are two ‘Lucky Pennies’ , one from the year of the recipient’s birth and the other from the year of the 50th birthday.
Such a memorable gift! It celebrates both lives, and creates an heirloom.
