This copper Whippet Dog Weathervane was a birthday present for the husband. His wife, Catherine, secretly worked with us on the design by sending us photos of their two dogs, Pilot and Gizmo. We then reworked our existing design to make it a personalized portrait of their two dogs. One of the photos above shows Ken and I delivering the weather vane with Catherine’s surprised husband holding the vane while Catherine is holding the two Greyhounds it represents. Catherine requested that for their sculpture we apply optional gold leafing to replicate the brindle markings and the female’s light chest and tail tip, again matching her actual markings. These details make for a wonderfully touching piece of American Folk Art.
In sum, as pictured this piece features glass eyes, optional gold leafed patterns, and distinctive tooling which gives the fur a realistic texture on the body. Personalized dog weather vanes can feature gold-leafing to bring out your pet’s distinctive markings, as well as dog collars bearing your dog’s name.
The Whippets featured above were fabricated in our Large size (3 foot long sculpture piece, in total). In the Large size each of the Whippets is approximately one and one half feet long. In the Medium size (2 foot long sculpture piece), each Whippet is approximately one foot long.
It is also possible to add inscribed collars to your dogs. When inscribing dog’s name on the collar we can also add a tag in the shape of a dog bone, a heart or a circle. Using a combination of these options, we can incorporate up to three dog’s names on a single dog weather vane! We do this by putting one dog’s name on one side of the collar, another dog’s name on the opposite side of the collar and a third name on the dog tag. The collar and/or tag can be optionally gold leafed as well.
The Whippet is a breed of dog, specifically a member of the sighthound family. They are active and playful and are physically similar to a small greyhound. Whippets were bred to hunt by sight, coursing game in open areas at high speeds. One can find numerous representations of small greyhound-like hounds in art dating back to Roman times but the first use of the word “whippet” was in 1610.
We also have a popular Greyhound Weathervane in our catalog that might interest you.
