This delightful Geisha Weathervane was commissioned by a gentleman who has a collection of Japanese wood cut prints. He asked us to replicate as a copper weather vane the geisha in one of his favorite prints. He loved our idea of having the ground she is walking over be a shamisen, the classic Japanese three stringed instrument often played by the Geisha.
This is a highly detailed swell-bodied piece. It is also mirror image. You can see in the pictures above that this geisha is always facing you as the vane turns in the wind. In addition to the deep depth of the copper tooling, our customer requested optional gold leaf gilding on the skin, umbrella and shamisen, and to create the design elements in the fabric of our geisha’s kimono and obi sash. He also had us apply palladium leaf on the edging of the kimono and on her head scarf. These bright non-ferous elements will add vivid contrast to this piece for many years as the copper of the sculpture first weathers through the darker browns and eventually patinas.
