The Flying Great Blue Heron Weathervane, Ardea herodias, featured in this photo shows the bird with fully extended wings. The wings are comprised of three separate layers of copper creating a beautiful shadowing and providing structural strength.
The heron weathervane shown here has optional gold leaf on the beak and legs. As the copper patinas a deep chocolate brown color the gold leafed accents will stand out in vivid contrast. We also used brass to create the reeds for additional visual contrast. We often add brass accents to the design because the directionals (North, South, East, West) below the sculpture piece are also made of brass. This helps tie the entire assembly together.
West Coast Weather Vanes offers several variations on our Heron and Egret weathervane designs. As with most of our animal designs, the heron vanes come with custom glass eyes. We normally choose eyes that are most representative of the animal we are creating, but our customers have the option of choosing whichever eye color they want. In addition to custom taxidermy eyes (which give the most realistic appearance) we also offer translucent glass jewel eyes. Taxidermy eyes are opaque but can glint in the sunlight. When you choose colored translucent glass eyes, sunlight can shine through the jeweled glass, drawing dramatic attention to the the entire weathervane.
Between the bird’s two wings there is a ‘T’ Brace. Nearly invisible from most angles, it is there to reinforce and strengthen the wings on the sculpture piece. Most of our birds with big wings, shown in the upbeat position, will have similar bracing.
We always enjoy hearing from our customers after they receive their weathervane. Here is a particularly nice comment we received from a Great Blue Heron customer:
“We bought a Great Blue Heron from you 10 years ago for our new house; however, for various reasons we did not install it. Now we have a new barn and have installed the weather vane on the cupola! We are very proud of our Weathervane!” Peter Boutell and Mary Ann Kirch Santa Cruz California February 2008
