This Great White Shark Weather Vane, Carcharodon carcharias, has the body of the shark depicted swimming in a straight line rather than with a curved body. This version is crafted entirely in copper. Because our weather vanes are made to order the choice of metals can be modified at the time an order is placed. For example, we can add optional gold leaf to the sharkâs teeth and/or belly to give a more distinctive two tone effect. For this weathervane, we actually order custom shark eyes to give the shark a more animated appearance.
One of our favorite shark weathervane customers place their order on behalf of a new law school facility at a university in Florida. The shark is a popular weather vane with our customers in Florida but we also have one in Canada and others all along the Eastern Seaboard.
In addition to the Great White Shark Weather Vane depicted here, we also offer a curved variation where the body of the shark appears to be turning in the water. If your taste runs to other sharks, we also offer a most interesting Hammerhead Shark Weathervane.
According to a recent study, California great whites have migrated to an area between Baja California and Hawaii known as White Shark Cafe to spend at least 100 days before migrating back to Baja. On the journey out, they swim slowly and dive down to around 900 m (3,000 ft). After they arrive, they change behavior and do short dives to about 300 m (1,000 ft) for up to 10 minutes. Why they migrate and what they do at their destination is still unknown. Possibilities include seasonal feeding or mating.
