Our Hawaiian Hawk Weathervane, Buteo solitarius, was originally commissioned and designed as a memorial to a beloved spouse. Though once endemic to the Hawaiian Islands the Io Hawk is now found only on the Big Island of Hawaii and is considered extremely endangered. This beautiful bird is a source of pride to many Hawaiians.
This sculpture piece is fabricated in copper in three dimensional style, with a security device, glass eyes and optional gold leaf on the talons and beak. This gilding will remain in high contrast for many decades as the copper weathers through the darker tones and then patinas. There are pennies soldered to the shoulders commemorating significant dates in our client’s life.
I received my weather vane, and it is even more beautiful than I had imagined. I am so very pleased! Thank you for all of the love and careful craftsmanship you put into your work. I can’t wait to see my Hawaiian hawk up on the roof. Mahalo nui loa.
It is an honor for us to share in such a soaring remembrance.
