This version of our basic Dressage Horse Weather Vane was originally commissioned as a group gift for an elementary school teacher retiring to devote her time to dressage…her favorite pursuit. We sent the teachers participating in the gift two ‘lucky pennies’, one from the year the teacher began working at the school, and one from the year in which she retired. Everyone made wishes on the pennies then sent them back to us, and we used them to cap the ends of the horizontal tube that represents the ground under the horses hooves. Such a sweet send off.
Silhouette weather vanes were very popular around the turn of the century and offer a less expensive alternative to swell-bodied weathervanes. This particular weathervane was crafted in copper. We used twisted copper wire to create the effect of a braided mane and used chase lines to indicate the mane and other facial features.
We have also created silhouette horses where we apply optional gold leaf instead of the twisted copper wire to delineate the mane and tail. As the copper weathers the gold leaf stands out in vivid contrast, creating a pleasing visual dynamic. In addition to this Basic Dressage Weather Vane, we offer several horse weathervanes doing different forms of dressage.
The purest form of classical riding is the ‘High School’ dressage, of Haute Ecole and takes years for both the horse and rider to master. When a horse has finished its training it can perform the Grand Prix dressage movements of collect and extended gaits, passage, and piaffe, and it can perform ‘Airs Above the Ground’. These ‘Airs’ include the courbette, capriole, levade, and ballotade. All these movements are protective and derive from when the horse was used in war.
