This active copper Dressage Horse Weathervane was made to showcase the classic stride of a Dressage Horse. This is one of our earliest horse weathervanes. Very early in our career as newly minter weathervane makers, this design was ordered by a collector who simultaneously commissioned the same design from two other custom handcrafted weathervane makers. She now has three unique interpretations of the same weather vane fabricated by three custom handcrafted copper weathervane makers! We suspect that this was quite an astute move and that this weathervane trio should become quite valuable over time.
She sent the same photo of her horse to three different weathervane making companies and then commissioned the design. Each of us did our own interpretation of her horse. Our finished design is shown above. We made the horse in copper but also used brass inlays to match three of the four white ‘socks’ to further enhance the portrait. On other weathervanes we have made in this series we added optional gold leaf to the mane and tail to offer a nice visual contrast between the weathered copper and the lighter golden sections of the sculpture piece, added an optional palladium blaze to the forehead, varied the braiding on both the mane and tail, etc, all based on customer preferences.
Each of our weathervanes is truly custom because each is made to individual order. So, even though this weathervane is offered as a limited edition of 50, no two are ever exactly alike. In fact, we also offer another distinct variation on this basic Dressage design, which we call Version 2. In the variation, the horse is longer and lower with a strong sense of collected movement. By comparing the two versions, you can see how far we have come after thirty-plus years of weathervane-making experience!

In either version, the eyes are glass, typically brown with black pupils. The glass eyes give the sculpture a vigorous and animated appearance. The horizontal tube can be inscribed with a personalized inscription; some customers request a family name, others might ask us to stamp the name of their farm or ranch onto the weathervane. Copper is the metal of choice for weathervanes as it is non-ferrous (it won’t rust) so this inscription could still be visible even a hundred years from now. Also included is a penny from the year of manufacture, sealed into the sculpture piece. Additional ‘lucky‘ pennies are often included representing important dates for the recipient.
A beautiful event, Dressage is a competitive equestrian sport defined by the International Equestrian Federation as the highest expression of horse training and is often referred to as Horse Ballet. Although the discipline has ancient roots in Europe, Dressage was first recognized an important equestrian pursuit during the Renaissance. Today, competitions are held at all skill levels from amateur to the World Equestrian Games. Horse breeds most often seen at the Olympic level and other international FEI competitions are in the Warmblood category. For this reason, most of our Dressage Horse Weathervanes are Warmbloods but can be modified according to our customer’s preferences.
