Our Extended Trot Dressage Horse Weathervane V1 was originally commissioned by the owner of a horse that was performing Dressage at the Olympic level. She sent us photos showing the amazing physicality of her horse and this Extended Trot Horse Weathervane was based on these images. Later, we had customers see this ‘high stepper’ and request variations on this original pose, and from those requests Version 2 was created. Such adaptations are possible here at West Coast Weather Vanes, because we do not use molds. Each is hand fabricated and can be adapted to suit. We can also work from photos to make small, individual changes, transforming each weathervane into a portrait of that owner’s horse.
The original was fabricated in copper with a brass mane and tail. Brass is primarily composed of copper and patinas similarly, showing subtle variations in color over time. We can also apply optional gold leaf on mane, tail, boots and blaze. While brass and gold leaf look similar when the weathervane is new, the gold leaf remains shiny and golden and over time, the distinction between the gold leaf and the copper becomes more pronounced. The decision to go all copper, copper and brass, or copper with gold leaf depends on how prominent you want your weathervane to appear in its setting. Personally, I am a fan of the gold leafing because it keeps the visual dynamic more interesting as it moves through the patina process. Gold leaf also helps the weather vane stand out against a competitive background, such as trees or skyscrapers.
Each of our weathervanes is custom made to order, each unique, while part of a limited number series. The eyes are glass, with a nice selection of colors. The horizontal tube can be inscribed. Also included is a penny from the year of manufacture, sealed into the sculpture piece. Additional ‘lucky‘ pennies can be included representing important dates for the recipient.
