Our customers from Upstate New York commissioned this sweet Labrador Retriever Weathervane as a portrait of their two dogs. They sent us pictures for refining the details and if you look closely you will see, among other details, a difference in the shape of their eyes.
This project began with a note from our customer that said:
I love your Labrador Retriever Weathervane (black and yellow lab – sitting and lying down. They could be my dogs! I am interested in working with you to design something similar but in my case the black and yellow labs would be sitting in an Adirondack Guide Boat (or canoe). This would go on top of our garage. I am very interested to learn how to work with you to create such a weathervane.
Once an order was placed, the next step was for her to send us photos and for us to create the design. After the design was approved, the customers made metal selections, choose glass eyes, and selected optional gilding to represent the yellow lab and to put a trim line around the rim of the guide boat. Gilding creates a brightness that will last years after both copper and brass begin to darken and weather. The two metals will eventually patina into shades of green at rates that vary with climate and proximity to the ocean.
The collar on the copper dog was gilded, while the collar on the gold leafed dog was left copper. Each collar has a tag that was inscribed with each dog’s name. The boat also has an inscribed name plate on the side.
We love our pets here at West Coast Weather Vanes and are always happy to meet and work with pet owners who appreciate how much our four legged friends enhance our lives.
And, to conclude our story, here is the final note we received from these lovely people:
Hi! The weathervane was a huge hit! My husband loves it so much that he’s wondering if perhaps to mount it in our garden closer to the lake!
