Moby Dick Weathervane

Great White Whale Weather Vane with Captain Ahab

This Moby Dick Weather Vane with Captain Ahab consists of a copper Sperm Whale, Physeter macrocephalus, with optional gold leaf applied to the splashing waves. Perched on top of Moby Dick is Ahab, with a harpoon in hand and deadly line coiled round his peg leg. We also used optional gold leaf on Ahab’s face, hands and pants to add visual clarity to his person. Because each of our vanes is made to order, the choice of metals can be modified to your preference.

A customer commissioned this weather vane based on the two main adversaries in the classic novel by Herman Melville, first published in 1851. The story tells the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab has one purpose on this voyage: to seek out and kill Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab’s boat and bit off his leg, which now drives Ahab in single minded pursuit of his leviathan nemesis.

The weathervane sits not on top of the customer’s house but on a dock heading out to his boat. Its prominent location give visitors a chance to admire the details in the sculpture piece, including the infamous rope looped around Ahab’s leg. It also gives the prospective sailor pause to reflect upon one’s place in the scheme of things as he or she ventures out onto the mysterious and unpredictable sea.
