The Puffin weather vane featured here shows the bird standing on rocks. Details can have optional gilding to create a nice contrast with the copper body. Glass eye color options are many. If you are a fan of Puffins you might also enjoy our Puffin and Frog Weathervane.
This weathervane was originally commissioned as a birthday gift, but our customer so fell in love with our Traditional Quail Weathervane, she ordered it for herself as well as this puffin for her sister.
The common name puffin describes any of three auk species (or alcids) in the bird genus Fratercula (Latin: little brother —probably a reference to their black and white plumage, which resembles monastic robes). Each sports a brightly colored beak in the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil.
