This copper Quail Family with Three Chicks Weathervane was originally commissioned in 1999 by a California family. Pictured you will see our customer added optional gold leaf gilding to this sculpture piece for accenting the distinctive markings of the quail. The eyes are glass, and are available in a nice range of colors. The bar beneath the birds’ feet is inscribed with family names. We can detail your weathervane to represent either California Quail or Gambels Quail, depending on which bird is native to your area. Each of our weathervanes is made to order, so if you choose to include flowers from your region on your directionals call to discuss the details. Draped on each of the four directionals pictured here are optional California Poppy flowers with gold gilding on the petals. Because our creative and diverse customer base wants flexibility for their personal weathervane we offer these draped poppies on the directionals at $150.00 each.
Our wonderful artisans crafted this weathervane from copper sheet in the swell bodied technique, free hand style. As a result, though every weathervane we make is part of a limited number series, no two are ever exactly alike. When ordering you will have the option of including Lucky Pennies of significant dates along with the penny from the year of manufacture that will be sealed into your sculpture piece. Some choose to put pennies in each of the birds representing the children and parents of their family.
Our quail weathervanes have taken residence in diverse locations. They show and function beautifully at ground level, on fences and decks, and certainly on roof tops.
Of note, any time a weather vane sculpture piece consists of multiple design elements (in this case the parent pair and three chicks) each of the individual elements is smaller within the overall design than a weathervane that contains only one solid design element (for example, a grizzly bear). This may influence the size weathervane you would select for your particular installation environment, particularly if you are choosing between two sizes, as referenced in our Sizing Guidelines.
Quail is a collective name for several genera of mid-sized birds in the pheasant family Phasianidae, or in the family Odontophoridae. The California Quail, Callipepla californica, also known as the California Valley Quail or Valley Quail, is a small ground-dwelling bird in the New World quail family. It is the state bird of California.
