This Mackinaw Sailboat Weathervane was commissioned by one of our favorite customers. Not only has his family visited our studio (they live in Colorado) but they have also ordered Elk, Cougar and Mustang Weathervanes from us in the past.
This most recent weathervane may be the most special. They are in the process of renovating their historic family home in Michigan on the shores of a large lake. Chris sent us photos of the family’s Mackinaw Sailboat that previous generations had sailed on this very lake. He asked us to replicate it for the top of a turret on their restored home. We just received photos of the weathervane installed on top of the house.
For this project the hull of the vessel is copper in 3D Style and the sails are fabricated in brass. At the customer’s request the trimline and the Argo name on the hull and flags were executed in optional gold leaf. This gilding will remain a bright contrast for decades, as the other ferrous metals gradually weather, darken and patina.
It will be fun to see it when the house is completely finished!
