Our Shamrock Weathervane, or Lucky Clover Leaf Weather Vane, is, not surprisingly,  a popular design with people of Irish ancestry. In keeping with the traditions of Ireland we have designed a variation on a Celtic knot for the arrow’s tip and fletching. The gold leafing on this copper weather vane, which stands out in distinct contrast to the copper, is included in the price.* When, over time, the shamrock in this vane patinas to a lovely green shade, this classic design will mimic the beautiful coloration of this most distinctive plant.

The shamrock is a famous symbol associated with Ireland. It is a three-leafed clover, emerald green in color.  According to legend, the shamrock was a sacred plant to the Druids because its leaves formed a triad, and three was a mystical number in the Celtic religion. Making use of this precedent, St. Patrick used the shamrock in the 5th century to illustrate the doctrine of the Holy Trinity as he introduced Christianity to Ireland.

Most of our Shamrock Weathervane customers have surnames that are decidedly Irish. Curiously, though we have made vanes for customers of Irish descent, we have yet to send one of our Shamrock Weathervanes to the emerald isle.

Customers of Irish descent, who live in San Francisco, sent us two of the photos we have here and the following charming comments about their new weathervane:

“Hello Lizanne,

Today (Easter Monday) is the Day (although the date changes) that the Irish Rebellion took place in the Dublin Post Office in 1916. So we usually fly the “Tri-Color” in honor of those patriots. Today was an extra special remembrance, as it was also the date that the roofers scheduled to mount our shamrock weathervane.

IT LOOKS AWESOME, A TRUE WORK OF ART!!!!

We are thrilled with the final product, as are our neighbors!!! We will send you an updated photo as the color changes.

Thanks again for all of your patience, insight, and hospitality. You have a very gifted team of artisans that build these beautiful works of art! We are so happy that we found your company and were able to support your passion!

All the Best to you, and the team!

Celtic knots are a variety of mostly endless knots and stylized graphical representations of knots used for decoration adopted by the ancient Celts. After Christian influence spread to the Celts around 450 A.D. these knots were adopted for use in the ornamentation of Christian monuments and manuscripts like the 8th century St. Teilo Gospels, the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels.

The Irish word for clover is seamróg, which was anglicized as “shamrock”. It represents a close approximation of the original Irish pronunciation. The shamrock was traditionally used for its medical properties and was a popular motif in Victorian times. It is also a common way to represent Saint Patrick’s Day.

* Because the cost of gold leaf fluctuates frequently, the price of this weathervane could go up or down based on current market conditions. Please verify pricing with us prior to placing your order.
