This Sun and Moon with Shooting Star Weather Vane is the result of an enjoyable collaboration with one of our favorite customers. This customer, who lives in Florida, has ordered a number of weathervanes from us over the years, including a Kingfisher, two Large Mouth Bass, an Alligator Chasing a Fish, and a Box Turtle Weather Vane. It is always a pleasure to hear from her because she has such interesting ideas for a new project. She does enjoy our repeat customer discount of 10%, and when ordering two at once our customers get the 10% discount on both vanes even when it is their first order!
As shown here, the circular disk represents both the sun and the crescent moon. Optional gilding in gold and palladium was used to emphasize this imagery. The radiating rays and the tail section of the comet are copper. Optional gold leaf was also added to the star, and the tail streaks in the comet. We also applied optional palladium leaf to provide contrast to the crescent moon. The copper rays extending out from the main body are striking against a clear sky background. You can see in the pictures what a bright eye catching contrast this gilding creates as the copper and brass darken, weather and eventually patina.
As with all of our designs, this vane can be made in all copper, copper and brass or with optional gold or palladium leafing.
The sunburst in this weather vane is based on a design or figure commonly used in architectural ornaments and patterns. In architecture the sunburst is often used in window details, including fanlights and rose windows, as well as in decorative motifs. The sunburst motif is characteristic of Art Deco, Art Nouveau styles and in church architecture. A sunburst is also frequently used in emblems and military decorations.
The Moon is the Earth’s only natural satellite and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. From earth it is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun. Its prominence in our sky and its regular cycle of phases have, since ancient times, made the Moon an important cultural influence on language, calendars, art and mythology. In this design you can see the crescent moon within the backdrop of a full moon, symbolically representing the differing phases of the moon.
In many cultures there are traditions of prosperity and good luck associated with shooting stars and comets. Making a wish the moment you glimpse their fleeting beauty in the night sky is thought to ensure that your wish will come true. If you want to combine the tradition of wishing on a star with the century old weathervane tradition of putting a ‘lucky penny’ inside your weathervane sculpture piece, you just may be able to increase the good fortune coming your way! Sun-lovers should also see also our weathervanes, Sun & Clouds, Sun with Moons and Comet, Sun Surf and our Fancy Sun Wall Sculpture.
