The Steelhead Weather Vane, Oncorhynchus mykiss, featured in this photo consists of a copper body with optional gold-leafed fins and speckles. The copper itself will first weather a deep chocolate brown before eventually turning a beautiful turquoise green. The parts of the fish that are gilded, will stay a soft luminous golden color. Especially when your weathervane is displayed a visually competitive background like trees, the addition of the gold leaf helps your eye easily separate the weathervane from its backdrop.
The glass eyes are custom made and ordered from a taxidermist to give them a lifelike appearance. Normally our fish weather vanes are made with brown glass eyes with black pupils, however, if you prefer, we can even use translucent glass jewels for eyes.

The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), aka redband trout, is a species of Pacific salmon native to tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America. Fish which have gone to sea (including those returning for spawning) are known as steelhead, or ocean trout (Australia).
