The Humpback Whale Weather Vane, Megaptera novaeangliae, featured is hand crafted in copper. Because our vanes are custom made, the choice of metals can be modified at the time of ordering. The Humpback Whale’s eyes are made from art glass eyes with black pupils. People who order this weather vane get to choose the eye color.
This is one of Ken and my favorite weathervanes because it was our very first design. We were so proud on the day we finished making our first weather vane in the spring of 1988. In fact, we kept that weather vane and have it to this day. It is one weathervane with which we will never part. When we stop and take a minute to look at it and see the thick wavy solder lines and not-so-subtle shaping techniques we used to make it, we can see how much our skills have improved since that proud day! The lovely part is, we are as excited to be making weather vanes today as we were the day we first started.

Living here on the California coastline, we often drive along side the ocean on our way to San Francisco or down to beautiful Big Sur. I can’t count the number of times we’ve pulled off onto a shoulder to watch a pod of these majestic creatures breaching and diving right off the beach. For those of us fortunate enough to live along the Pacific Coast, this is one of our most popular weathervane designs.
